NSCBI currently handles around 26 million passengers a year — all through one integrated terminal spanning 222,973 square metres. According to Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Director of NSCBI Airport, that terminal was already expected to hit full capacity as early as 2025–26, handling 8,460 peak-hour passengers daily.

So the Airports Authority of India (AAI) stepped in with a major expansion plan. The first step is already done — engineers have added 5,600 square metres to the current terminal, lifting interim capacity from 26 million to 28 million passengers. Then the old domestic terminal — built decades ago — is being cleared to make room for a whole new dedicated international terminal.

Once everything comes together, NSCBI will handle a combined 45 million passengers annually. That's 36 million domestic passengers in the upgraded existing terminal and 9 million international passengers in the brand-new building. That's nearly double today's total.
